During the fall semester, 11th graders at HTH were given the opportunity to work with different food and community service organizations. Each organization helped the students understand food equity and its impact. Each group reached out to a specific organization and volunteered or interviewed them. Since this project was in the duration of math class, we were able to look into different data sets based on different food topics geographically. The class also worked with sophomores that were creating planter boxes and looking at different perspectives of food equity. Our end result was to have a seminar with the sophomores to discuss food equity and security.
Looking back at this project and the work that I've done, I am most proud of the introduction that I worked on with my groupmate, Melody. We collaborated very well and each added our own part. Something that I felt that I struggled with was trying to involve a group member to participate in the work that was being done. The rest of the group was working, but at times it felt that we were behind on our work without everyone's input. Overall this project has its ups and downs, but it provided a lot of insight to food equity that I've never observed before.
A look into the future:
If I were to do this project in the future again I would change the availability of gathering our data. When starting our data analysis we were confused about where start our data and how to relate it to our set interest or question. We also had to find outside data that could help our group during the seminar during exhibition and for our research paper. In the future, I would have a set data per group in the beginning therefore groups won't be lost in the duration of this project.
Key moment:
A key moment during this project was the seminar since I felt that it went very well during exhibition. Everyone at least spoke once and commented on each others research. During the project the group felt confused, but during the seminar everything clicked and it made things more clear. The parents as well were interested and added their own opinion and input.
